Telephone-Based Cognitive Therapy Shows Promising Outcomes
Study reveals significant cognitive improvements for Medicare patients via phone therapy.
Moneta Health has released findings from a study indicating that its telephone-based cognitive rehabilitation program significantly enhances cognitive function and quality of life for older adults, particularly those in rural areas lacking access to in-person care.
The research, conducted in collaboration with the University of Massachusetts Amherst, involved 141 Medicare patients diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment or early-stage dementia. Results showed that 71 to 94 percent of participants experienced improvements across various clinical measures, including quality of life and cognitive abilities, meeting or surpassing national benchmarks for traditional outpatient therapy.
The program, which Moneta describes as 'physical therapy for the brain,' employs licensed speech therapists who conduct weekly sessions over the phone, supplemented by personalized cognitive exercises facilitated by an AI voice assistant named Mona. Notably, the therapy does not require any app, smartphone, or internet access, making it highly accessible.
Despite the proven benefits of cognitive rehabilitation, fewer than 20 percent of eligible patients currently have access to such therapies, especially in rural regions. Moneta aims to eliminate these barriers, allowing patients to receive necessary cognitive care from the comfort of their homes.
According to Paul A. Campbell, co-founder and CEO of Moneta Health, "Cognitive impairment affects one in three adults over 65, and too many families are told that nothing can be done. This data says otherwise." The study's outcomes suggest that accessible interventions can effectively address cognitive decline, potentially transforming care for affected individuals.
Moneta Health's services are currently covered by various insurance providers in states such as Florida, Montana, Nevada, Washington, and West Virginia. The complete study manuscript will be available on Moneta's website later this week.
